What to Expect During a Trip to a Chiropractor
Your initial visit to the chiropractor will last someone between 30 - 45 minutes. The chiropractor will do the following during the initial visit:
Take your medical history
The chiropractor will ask specific questions pertaining to your pain in order to understand how your problem may have come about. The chiropractor will require information concerning your medical history, past surgeries and medication, and family medical history. Be prepared to bring any necessary medical records, MRI reports, and x-ray reports with you.
Exam
The chiropractor will conduct a body exam to determine how and where to start with orthopaedic, functional and neurological tests and soft tissue and joint assessments to find either a test, range of motion, or body position that reproduces your symptoms. The purpose of this exam is to target the specific pain generators that cause your symptoms, and see how it relates with the whole body.
Diagnosis
The chiropractor's objective here is to determine the exact structure responsible for your pain, and determine why or in what way it is irritated or damaged due to biomechanical stress. They will identify any other factors contributing to your symptoms and give you a recognizable name for your condition.
Explanation
Once a diagnosis has been determined, the chiropractor will discuss recommendations and treatment options with you. The chiropractor will explain your situation in such a way that you are able to understand how many treatments you will likely require, and a prognosis for your complete recovery.
Treatment
The treatment will consist of traditional chiropractic manipulation and specific soft tissue therapies, sometimes in combination with an individualized home exercise plan to support recovery and prevent recurring symptoms.
Subsequent Visits
Follow-up or maintenance visits generally take approximately 15 minutes. Each visit is a diagnostic and treatment process, where you must report your progress each time you visit and inform the chiropractor of any new or lingering symptoms. The chiropractor will constantly monitor your situation and adjust your treatment as necessary.
