Dear All,
Sungi have over 30 staff members who are trained in disaster preparedness with experience in relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction after flash floods, earthquake, heavy snowfall/rain. Therefore after July/August 2010 flood disaster, five teams have been formed for: Kohistan, Charsada/Noshera/Swat/Dir, Rajanpur and Jaferabad. Working closely with the local partners Sungi started with medical relief, food distribution, construction of doli to cross the river, clearing of roads, water filtration boxes along with household items, hand pumps installation/reactivation. Besides this Sungi is also a member of a network NHN (National Humanitarian Network) which is working towards improving coordination in relief efforts on ground involving the District Administration. Of course the need for a functioning local government system is severally being felt at this point as lack of enough hands to deliver the relief effectively is the burning issue. www.sungi.org is giving updates on Sungi’s work. I will try, whenever possible, to give my views through emails, if you find these useful please let me know. I was in Noshehra on 25th August visiting Sungi’s Mobile medical camp at Mohala Dhobian UC Choki Town. Already at 9 am a line of women and men was waiting to see the doctor. The need for women doctors was expressed by the young women standing in line as one had been injured with bruises all over her body. The pictures reflect the absolute destruction caused by the flood water which remained in this area for over two weeks. Wheat stored for the year, clothes, mattress, electric appliances everything is destroyed being in water for so many days. But people have started to clean up their houses ( the ones that are still standing. The lanes show the waste thrown out from the homes and the bulldozers (organized by the Tehsil administration)are busy clearing up the lanes. Clean water for drinking is the urgent need. First week Baitul Mall had organized a large number of water tankers but now only one by the army and two from Medicine san Frontier.

Dear Friends of Sungi,
On 10th and 12th September Sungi distributed 300 aqua boxes donated by Feed the Children UK in Basti Sidique, UC Noorpur Machiwala, District Rajanpur. Earlier Sungi with the help of volunteer from Saya Foundation (an organization in Rajanpur) had identified the community by visiting each location where families had taken shelter (some under a tree, or a charpoi, or a make shift canvas roof, or a room that was still standing). A detailed assessment form was filled with information about family members and their priority needs. Whether they had received any aid or not etc. The location, date and time for distribution is given to the assessed family and the head of household is requested to come. The selected location (a school) is at walking distance. Below is part of the process which can be seen visually in these uploaded pictures:
