Food Strategies to Manage and Overcome Side Effects of Stress
recommended by Isabelle Huot, Dt.P., PhD, Verdun, QC
- Eat with the family! Family meals represent a moment of sharing and discussion that relieves professional tensions.
- Avoid throwing yourself into “fast sugars”, such as chocolate and other candy bars, in order to relax. Go take a long walk instead. Nothing beats fresh air to decompress.
- Watch out for caffeine: it increases anxiety when taken in large quantities.
- Eat comfort foods. Dishes that you appreciate and that bring back good memories improve morale.
- Increase your intake of grain products (pasta, rice, couscous, etc.). They contain complex carbohydrates that increase the serotonin circulating in the body, a hormone that promotes relaxation and well-being.
- Consume probiotics. Stress increases our vulnerability to infections. By incorporating probiotics daily (yogurts, fermented milk), we become more resistant.
- Increase your consumption of fatty fish. Omega 3 from fish is increasingly recognized as playing a positive role on your mood. Eat fish 3 to 4 times a week.
- Eat enough foods that contain magnesium (grain products, nuts and seeds) since in periods of stress, we lose magnesium in urine.

Stress of Dealing with Teenagers
Being the parent of teenagers can be the source of alot of stress. Here are some tips and facts that will help you master the situation and decrease your stress level.
as suggested by Montreal social worker and therapist Linda Kalman, lindakalman.net
- Remember that your children are never too old for structure, discipline and rules.
- While your young ones are in their growing stages, the main thing they are looking for is guidance.
- Be supportive of your children’s decisions.
- Even though you have expectations for your children, they have expectations from you as well. When you start showing them you are living up to their expectations, they will be more likely to fulfill yours.
- Always remember that total freedom is not a blessing, and even though your teenagers will try and break away from you, they still need you to be there when they need you.
- Taking risks is a way of learning while growing up, and they will learn from their mistakes.
