What is the glycemic index ?
The glycemic index ranks food based on their effect on the blood glucose level. Low glycemic index ( GI) foods promote long term health, lower your risk of heart disease, and diabetes. Low GI foods will help you feel fuller longer, because glucose only trickles into your blood stream. High GI foods will cause your blood glucose levels to shoot up and then plumet, leaving you to be soon hungry.
Low GI - 55 and under
Medium GI - 55 - 65
High GI - 70 and above
